To millions of Nigerians who love President Muhammadu Buhari and believe that he’s on a mission to make Nigeria a better country, the President is hale and hearty, or a bit sick and doing the right thing by undergoing the treatment he needs. He’s alive and would always be in their minds.
But, to those who do not like President Buhari or who believe that he’s brought more hardship than positive change he promised during the campaign, he’s been dead for about two weeks now. Photographs showing the President alive and even watching network news on Channels TV did not change their belief. They believe that the President is dead of too sick to run the country again. To these people, power should immediately be transferred to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo or another election should immediately hold with no regards for the constitution.
In the middle of these two camps are journalists and President Buhari’s spokesmen, Garba Shehu and Femi Adesina. While journalists rely on verifiable information, Mr. Garba and Mr. Adesina have to tell the story of the President abroad. They have released pictures of the President apparently doing well. They have told Nigerians that Mr. Buhari had written the National Assembly to extend his vacation. They have even spoken to the President’s personal doctor who certified that he was hale and hearty.
In his latest post on Facebook, Garba Shehu said the President is not even in any hospital but in the residence of the Nigerian High Commission in London.
“I spoke to the president’s personal doctor last night, and he told me President Buhari is not in any serious condition to worry about. He is not in hospital. He is in the residence at the Nigerian High Commission.
“He and his delegation were ready to come home yesterday but for the delayed test result which came in yesterday necessitated that he delays his return.
“There is nothing to worry about as far as his condition is concerned,” he said.
Meanwhile a video call would have ended all the speculations!
